The Origin of Species- Brian 3

September 1st, 2009 · 1 Comment

The Origin of Species is no small book, it’s over 450 pages and contains its’ own glossary. Even with that length, Darwin continually says that the space is not big enough to fully expound on his observations. This is because Charles Darwin was a master of science as a process.

He spent several years on a ship called the Beagle traveling from country to country, and then he would hike inland for miles. All the while observing the plants, animals, and geology of the different places. Darwin would spend full days just drawing pictures of birds so he could record what he saw.

When I think about science as a process, I think about our self-countained labs that we observe in the classroom and write a conclusion the same day. Darwin did not publish his groundbreaking book until 23 years after his voyage. It took him that long to analyze his data and formulate his conclusion and that is real science as a process.
