Article:Coral Reef

Coral reef is a type of biotic reef that developes in tropical waters (Fact) by the growth of coralline algae, hermatypic corals, and other marine organisms. Coral reefs are typically massive biogenic formations of calcium carbonate (limestone) that is deposited in and around the bodies of inhabitants of the reef as skeletal material.

Article: Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest reef (Fact) and is located of the coast Queensland, Australia. It stretches of 2000 kilometers of length (Data)  and can be seen from space. This structure is composed of billions of little tiny organisms, know as coral polyps.

Artical:Coral Bleaching

Coral bleaching results when the symbiotic zooxanthellae (single-celled algae) are released from the original host coral organism due to stress (Fact). The reefs depend on this symbiotic photosynthesizing unicellular algae. This algae lives within the reef’s tissue. When the algae are released the reef loses its pigment leading to a bleached appearance.

artical 1; New coral reefs teeming with marine life discovered in brazil

  • Fact; scienttists have found a reef structure that has doubles in size, in southern atlantis oceans ( its a large/rich abrolhos reef.
  • Data; The new reef rages from 9-124 miles of coast in depths ranging from 60-220 feet.
  • Inference; The scientists collected this data by using sonar scan and three dimensional maps.

Georges Bank Post 1

March 26th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Georges Bank is just off the coast of Cape Cod Mass. at one point this was one of the biggest commercial fishing areas in North America. Mainly Halibut and Atlantic Cod come from Georges Bank. A lot of the fish that were coming from the bank were becoming less and less populated and they didn’t know if it was from all the commercial fishing going on so officials close off most of the commercial fishing from the bank.

Georges Bank at one time according to historians could have possible been an island and was home to many trees land wildlife and even man 10,000 years ago. Its not fact that it was an island but there is evidence of all of these life forms where Georges Bank stands today.

Why is the ocean  salty??

1. The salty of ocean – during billions years, the salt is malt from ground.

                                          – The river water wash salt from rock, then move to ocean (The erosion rocks are one of big factor)

–The eruption of a volcano makes new water which includes many salts. (New water: they didn’t exist

                                             Liquid before)

2. If salt keep come to ocean, seawater is kept volatilized, is ocean getting salty??

Answer: -the salt malt really easily

-a part of salt is volatilized with oceanwater.

Depths of the Ocean

March 4th, 2009 · 4 Comments

What I have learned in this class is that there are different depths of the oceans and names for them.  The deep sea is one of the most unexplored places on Earth.  There is only a certain distance that light will shine through.  Abyssalpelagic is the deepest zone and that is what the abyss is referred to.  But the Hadal zone is the depth of some trenches and that is the deepest the ocean goes.  The depth of the ocean goes farther than 6000 meters and can only be explored with cameras.  There are continental zones to.  The Epipelegic zone is as far as you can scuba dive which is 200 meters.  Other zones consist of Mesopelagic, and Bathypelagic that are below the Epipelegic zone.

In the deepest part of the ocean where there is hydrothermal vents, there is an abundance of life.  Small organisms and shrimp can survive without the use of oxygen.  The saline water that the organisms live in is highly toxic to all other life.  Since the water is so dark, the fish have eyes that act as flashlights to make searching for food easier.  “The deep sea may physically resemble a desert, but in terms of species composition it is more like a tropical rainforest.”
